At VETA
the main sponsor appears to be British Gas who, I have heard, are investing
more money in Mtwara than any other contributor is making or has made to
Tanzania. Well, they are a private company and not a charity or tax-funded
donor, and they will be making money from us here in Tanzania when they sell
the gas and oil they are here to obtain. The funding they are providing for
VETA will ideally upskill the local economy so that an effective and
sustainable infrastructure can be created in the next 8 years, which is when BG
will be ready to start taking the gas and oil out of the ground. Currently,
VETA has classrooms for plumbing, engineering, mechanics, electricity, and
carpentry, however the machines that they have are either too specialised and
were donated without any thought as to whether they would be any use, or are
broken with no one possessing the investigative knowledge in order to fix them,
or in the wrong place. The last one can be resolved fairly easily, and Bart has
already started fixing the machines in his workshop, but a lot remains to be done. Paul, Mike, Kayley and others have been here since earlier this year and have already made a tremendous start. It feels
like an exciting time: seeing the start of a huge project just a few months in, with people who have
ideas and skills to make this a fully-functioning vocational centre.
